Instrument Previews
I have provided some YouTube videos below to preview some of the beginner band instruments that we teach here at JTDS. These are all professional musicians who started out just like you!
Flute
A woodwind instrument, it has many buttons.
It is a high-pitched instrument.
Very pure, clear, beautiful tone.
Can play many different styles: classical, jazz, pop, & more.
Clarinet
A woodwind instrument with many buttons and a reed on the back of the mouthpiece.
Has a large range, from mid-range to high pitched.
Has a very unique tone, used in many different styles of music.
Saxophone
A woodwind instrument with many buttons and a reed on the back of the mouthpiece.
There are many different types of saxophones, first starting out on alto and working lower.
Very popular solo instrument for jazz and some pop music for its tone.
Trumpet
One of the brass instruments with 3 valves and a mouthpiece that you buzz into.
High pitched instrument used in a lot of different music.
Usually has the melody, and very popular solo instrument.
Trombone
A brass instrument with a slide instead of valves, and a mouthpiece you buzz into.
Lower pitched instrument that sets the foundation for the band.
Can be used in many different styles of music: classical, jazz, contemporary, ska, & more.
Baritone
May also be called the Euphonium.
Lower pitched instrument like the trombone, but uses valves instead of a slide.
Has a very warm, round, beautiful sound.
Percussion
Percussion instruments are those that you hit or strike to make a sound.
Percussion includes all the mallet/keyboard percussion, as well as auxiliary percussion like snare drum and bass drum.
Percussion students learn many different instruments in the percussion section, and are very rhythmic musicians.
